So I’m downloading a recently released demo on my trusty Playstation 3 home entertainment system. It takes awhile, but that’s not really news. The Playstation network has always been a slowpoke compared to the lightning fast Xbox Live one. And then the installation starts. And doesn’t stop. What’s wrong? I have no idea. I’ve now done my workout routine, taken a shower, written an article and will have finished this blog post before the installation is through.

So much for trying out a game real quick before starting the day. What the hell Sony, what is this, why does your console in another magnitude of time. Seriously. In related rants, why is data management on that thing so ridiculously fiddly? Not a good system for people like me who tend to be save file messies. Ah well. Just had to get this out.

I realized why I was somewhat disappointed of the music of Deus Ex: Human Revolution this year. And actually it’s quite simple. DX:HR’s music is not Daft Punks sublime score of Tron Legacy. The two seemed to be pretty similar at first glance. But eventually were not.

It seems whenever I discuss videogames with regular German folks, it turns out their perspective on the topic is either one of those or both with no middle ground in between. Seriously. Of course there are “mainstream nerds” these days, but for most of the people outside the nerdier spheres of things, whenever I say “I write about videogames” for them it means I spend my time with subject matter like this.

Bashing Bash TV

I’ve been really ready to genuinely like id’s new and somewhat mixedly received shooter-cum-racer RAGE. It’s a pretty game. It’s also pretty fun - most of the time. And then I hit the first Mutant Bash TV. It’s generally a fun romp through a number of challenge rooms, where you have to shoot down wave after wave of nimble, grunting mutants. Problem is, the very last challenge is something of a boss monster I failed to kill before it killed me.

Which in general wouldn’t be a problem. Die, adapt, try again. The standard formula of shooting games. The problem I have with this is the structure of Mutant Bash TV. It’s not embedded into the general mode of play of RAGE. It’s impossible to save the game anywhere while “inside” Mutant Bash TV. And the only checkpoint is - you guessed it - right at the beginning of the “episode”. So once the player fails ANYWHERE within Mutant Bash TV, it’s back to the beginning.

But not just that, it’s back to the beginning in the worst possible, game-flow breaking way, as the player has to wait for the announcer’s introductory oratory to be reeled off. Every god damn time. It’s like an unskippable cutscene. It’s adding insult to injury since saving manually after that is just not possible.

It’s just disappointing. Mutant Bash TV is a nice idea of adding a sort of arena mode, a bunch of challenge maps into a shooting game, embedded in the game’s narrative. Also since RAGE is usually a fun game to play, MBTV is actually FUN. Until you have to do it over and over again.
